The Quincy Hotel, rising in a glowing, neon block above the residential calmness of Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth neighbourhood, is one of those places that just oozes trendiness. Even the font of the sign seems to suggest something edgy – futuristic lines mixing with an almost Asian calligraphy effect that perhaps nods at the fact it’s part of the Far East Hospitality group.
The foyer is a temple to modern design with cheeky, fun twists that make it immediately appealing. There’s a colourful and competent clash of styles, fabrics and intriguing objects – a faux animal skin rug on the floor, arty cushions of be-lashed eyes on a crushed raspberry sofa, and glittery busts en-route to the restrooms. In pride of place is a very cool bookcase filled with curious items: a pair of British bulldog statues; a giant magnifying glass; glossy books about fashion; a retro camera. My eyes darted from the Union Jack telephone to the zebra cocktail shaker, and then noticed the snazzy waistcoat of the concierge. In some places this mash-up might not work – at The Quincy, it most certainly does.
One of the reasons is that the staff are lovely – although the hotel might have a ‘too-cool-to-care’ aesthetic, the people working here are welcoming, smiley, and only too happy to help with anything you require. On top of this, The Quincy isn’t just stylish, but has some serious awesome additions, such as the rooftop glass-enclosed pool that allows you to take a dip looking out across the city-scape below, and then sit on the LED illuminated deck with a cocktail admiring the view. What’s more, the gym is also at this dizzying 12th floor and is open 24/7. On my first evening I headed directly for the pool and enjoyed a completely unique swim in the glowing neon shimmer cast by nighttime Singapore.
So what about the accommodation? Here is where the combination of boutique style and business-traveller sleekness merges to very chic effect. My room was functional and smart, made out in gunmetal grey with a huge bed that commanded most of the space – a welcome sight to any weary guest. And one of the best elements had to be that view – once more Singapore was spread below in all its glittering glory. Tucked up in that vast snowy white bed, the glow filtering through a gauzy curtain before I’d put the blind down, it was wonderfully cosy and offered a real chance to feel part of the city. And on top of this there are exclusive Le Labo products in the bathroom, a mini-bar with an assortment of free soft drinks to refresh yourself, and the fabulous addition of a tablet in the room for use when exploring Singapore. This is a great example of The Quincy Hotel going that extra mile to see to their guest’s needs.
And their generosity can be seen in a myriad of other ways that are very popular with guests and are no doubt why so many return time after time. One of these is the All Day Light Refreshment offerings – there’s breakfast, afternoon snacks, and even freebie cocktails in the evening. So if you are feeling peckish and don’t want to leave the comfort of the hotel, then simply head to the restaurant, sit on one of the comfy upholstered orange chairs, and graze on whatever buffet items have been set out for your convenience. There’s even a very cool al fresco area to dine in, set amongst pools of water, decking, and drooping lush fronds, the whole effect of which is a tropical escape in the busy city.
This is what, at the end of the day, makes The Quincy such a great hotel. Whether you’re here for leisure or business, it provides a fabulous escape. Interesting, quirky and cool without being pretentious – these are the charms of this boutique residence that’s so perfectly situated in one of the most glittering cities of the world. For a hotel that is functional yet also has oodles of character, you can do no better than The Quincy – the experience is sure to be both unique and thoroughly enjoyable.
